Words Of Wisdom: Advice From Our CEO

Tessa May Marr

Marr Media Group 5 years anniversary

Well, for those of you who haven't already heard, we just hit a big anniversary--five years in business! These means a lot to all of us here at Marr Media Group, but in particular to our leader and CEO, Tessa May Marr, who built this company from the ground up. In her speech at our big Birthday Bash, she recalled…

“It’s hard to believe that five years ago this all started. I bought myself a new laptop, downloaded a template for an invoice and that was it. Me and my one client hit the ground running.”

And here we are today, a virtual team of five who have worked with over 40 clients. And her entrepreneurial spirit continues to charge us forward. We think that qualifies her to give out advice.😏 Recently, she’s contributed to a number of articles talking about entrepreneurship, and she had some great insights we wanted to compile and share!

What advice would you give your younger self?

You’re smarter than you think.

“One thing I wish my 25-year old self knew? You’re smarter than you think. Self-doubt and lack of confidence aren’t going to go away just because someone tells you you’re capable, or you get years of experience under your belt. That might all help, but even when you get really comfortable with something, there will be something else around the corner that you have to take on next – that you’ve never done and don’t know how to do. But if you want to grow in life, you’ve gotta keep taking those steps and taking those chances. You’ve gotta go for it. You need to get comfortable being uncomfortable. And sometimes, you’ve gotta fake it a little. And that’s ok. Everyone feels like a fraud when they start. But if you don’t believe you can do it, no one else is going to.”

What does being a CEO mean to you?

Three definitions.

“Chief – Dictionary dot com defines this word as the head or leader of an organized body of people; the person highest in authority. And I feel this fits perfectly—as the CEO is the captain of the ship, leading the business, her team and her customers into success. Executive – Executives are responsible for setting and driving the vision of a business and overseeing a team. And this is very much a part of the role of a CEO. Building the business and running it to get results. Officer – This word is about serving a greater purpose or cause. In the case of a CEO, it’s about serving and supporting her team, her customers and the vision of the business. And it’s also about setting standards and enforcing them—leading by example. Being a CEO means many things—it’s a demanding and rewarding role that requires the ability to think big picture, long term and to stay inspired while also caring deeply about the details and the people that matter.”

What trends do you expect to see in entrepreneurship?

Costly overhead now a thing of the past.

“I see people less and less afraid of entrepreneurship and more inclined to make that shift. There are fewer barriers to entry these days, with the dawn of technology. A brick and mortar shop is no longer a requirement, which means creating a business is as easy as starting a Facebook page or creating a website (which many do themselves!). Costly overhead can be a thing of the past as entrepreneurs opt to do things differently – often working from home (great tax write-offs!) and utilizing technology and time to satisfy their business needs, rather than signing leases, creating or purchasing products, managing distribution, etc. Flexibility is often the driver to work for oneself and entrepreneurs are not always looking to make it big and create large companies, but are more interested in finding their niche, finding work-life balance and making enough money to keep themselves in the lifestyle they desire. And with the shift in buyers looking to align themselves with authentic brands more than just purchasing from a place of convenience, habit or cost, it’s the perfect time to take a risk and start out on your own!”
